The Dahomey
The Dahomey Amazons were an all-female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey, in the Benin Republic, West Africa. They were known for their fearless attributes and exceptional swords and spear skills. The fictional world of Wakanda drew inspiration from these valiant women, who were both fearlessly beautiful and incredibly skilled.
The Dahomey Amazon warriors trained intensely, often engaging in hand-to-hand combat among themselves. Discipline was heavily emphasized as they learned essential survival skills.
The Dahomey Amazons were not allowed to have children or partake in any form of family life, as they were formally married to the King. Although the King did not engage in sexual relations with them, they remained celibate. However, a few were given in marriage to respected dignitaries of the kingdom.
“The Woman King” is the remarkable story of the Agojie (Dahomey Amazons). Inspired by true events, the film follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (played by Oscar-winner Viola Davis) as she encourages the King to confront the enemies determined to violate their honor and destroy their way of life.
